Abstract

The study was aimed at determining the optimum volume of planting media and frequency of NPK fertilizer applications for the growth and production of strawberry in midlands (+600m above the sea level). The study was done from March to September 2013 at the Trial Farm of SDN Kebon Kawung, Nanggerang Village, Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency. Sample analysis was done at the Center for Tropical Horticulture Studies, Bogor Agricultural University (PKHT IPB) Bogor. A randomized block design with two factors, namely planting media volume and fertilizer application frequency, was used. Planting media were made of soil, manure, and rice husk ash (3:1:1) in three volumes, namely 3, 5, and 7 liters. The fertilizer used was a compound NPK fertilizer (16:16:16) with 2, 3, and 4 applications. The rate of NPK application was 12 g/plant. Results showed that plants grown in planting medium of 7 liters produced more and longer stolons than did plants grown in planting medium of 3 liters. Frequency of fertilizer of 4 applications produced higher canopy than did 2 applications. No different effects of planting media volume and fertilizer application ferquency on crown height, number of leaves, leave width, number of flowers, number of fruits, and fruitset percentage. The resulted strawberries were found to contain TSS (total soluble solid) of about 6-11o Brix, TAT (total acid titration) of about 0.032 – 0.052 ml/10 g, and provitamin C of about 0.026-0.040 ml/10g.
